Farewell to a Classic: The End of the Subaru Legacy in 2025
After a remarkable 35-year run, the Subaru Legacy will see its final production in 2025. This iconic midsize sedan, renowned for pioneering all-wheel drive (AWD) in affordable consumer vehicles, has paved the way for Subaru’s success, particularly with the Outback wagon.
The Legacy revolutionized perceptions of AWD, dispelling myths about its complexity. Subaru’s innovative viscous centre differential system and computer-controlled AWD made the technology standard across most of its models. This, coupled with the Legacy’s boxer four-cylinder engines, provided a lower center of gravity and enhanced driving stability.
Since its inception, all 1.3 million U.S. Legacies have been produced at Subaru's Indiana plant, marking a significant American success story. However, shifting consumer preferences toward SUVs and electric vehicles (EVs) have led to the Legacy’s discontinuation. Subaru plans to introduce eight EV models by 2028, requiring production adjustments at its sole U.S. facility in Indiana. This facility will continue to produce the Crosstrek, Ascent, and Outback.
Priced at $26,016 in 2024, it was the least-costly AWD sedan on the market, offering spacious interiors, excellent fuel efficiency at 35 mpg on the highway, and top safety ratings. Despite selling 25,510 units in 2023 compared to the Outback's 161,814, the Legacy's departure marks the end of an era, with many customers likely transitioning to other models within the Subaru family.
As Subaru adapts to the evolving automotive landscape, Legacy’s footprint of innovation and reliability will continue to influence the brand’s future endeavours.
